Why has the guidance on second doses been changed from 12 weeks to 8?

In line with government and JCVI guidance, the NHS is bringing forward when people in the highest priority groups receive their second dose of the Covid-19 (coronavirus) vaccination, if they haven’t already had it.

You may have seen the news about different variants of coronavirus circulating in some parts of the country, including in our area. It is important that we quickly respond to this. That is why, in line with government and JCVI (Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation) guidance, we are bringing forward when people that are at greater risk of getting seriously ill from coronavirus, get their second dose of the vaccine, if they haven’t already had it. If you are in a higher risk group, it will ensure you can get maximum protection from the virus earlier.

I have had my first dose and have my second dose booked in – what do I do?

If you booked via the national NHS website:

Depending on the date of your second vaccination, some people in high-risk groups will be contacted by the NHS to offer earlier appointments for their second dose. If you’ve been contacted and you’d like to rebook, you’ll need to cancel your existing appointment before we can offer you new appointments. Please wait to be contacted if you think you’re in this group. You can find more information here.

If you booked via Swiftqueue:

If you are over 50 or in a priority group (frontline health and social care workers, clinically vulnerable or a carer) and your appointment is after 13 June your appointment will be moved to an earlier date. You will receive an e-mail/text message with the date of your new appointment. If you did not leave an e-mail or telephone number when booking your appointment, please contact the local booking line on 0115 8834640.

If you are aged 40-49, you can change your appointment by contacting the local booking line on 0115 8834640.

I had my first dose on the vaccine bus and need my second dose – what do I do now?

If you had your first dose on the vaccination bus, your second dose will now take place 8 weeks after your first dose in line with the new guidance. This means the bus will return to the same location 8 weeks after you had your first dose. You will receive a text or email reminding you of the date and time. If you did not leave an e-mail or telephone number when booking your appointment, please contact the local booking line on 0115 8834640.

I had my first dose at a GP practice and need my second dose – what do I do now?

If you are in a priority group (over 40s, frontline health and social care workers, clinically vulnerable or a carer) and had your first dose at a GP practice, your practice may review the timing of the clinic and if this is operationally possible it may be brought forward. Your GP practice will be in touch with you should the clinic time change.

I had my first dose at a pharmacy and need my second dose – what do I do?

If you are in a priority group (over 40s, frontline health and social care workers, clinically vulnerable or a carer) and had your first dose at a pharmacy, depending on the date of your second vaccination, you will be contacted by the NHS who will explain how to change your appointment.

I have had my first and second dose – what do I do?

If you have had your first and second dose, there is nothing you need to do. Please continue to follow the national guidance to help protect yourselves and your loved ones.

I am housebound and had my first dose at home. What do I do?

If you had your first dose at your house, our Housebound Vaccination Team will call you as soon as possible via the contact number they have for you to arrange a date and time for your second dose. If you have a new telephone number, please call 0115 883 4640 to let them know.

I don’t want to change my booking – can I leave it at 12 weeks?

In line with the latest guidance, it is now advised that those in the priority groups should get their vaccination at 8 weeks to ensure you can get maximum protection from the virus earlier. Please ensure you attend your appointment if it is brought forward. If you are unable to attend your second appointment on a specific date, please re-arrange for an alternative day by calling 0115 8834640.

Can I change the vaccine I have when I change the date?

Wherever possible the same vaccine needs to be given again. For example, if you had AstraZeneca for your first dose, you need to have this for your second. In some circumstances it is not possible to give the same vaccine, for example when a person has become housebound after having their first dose or in rare circumstances where someone may have a bad reaction to their first vaccination dose. In these situations a GP will assess the person and will discuss options with them.  They may then prescribe a different vaccine type for the second dose.

I had a 12 week gap between my doses – does this mean it is less effective?

The JCVI recommends that a 12 week gap between both doses will mean the vaccine is effective. You may have seen the news about different variants of coronavirus circulating in some parts of the country, including in our area. It is important that we quickly respond to this. That is why we are bringing forward when people that are at greater risk of getting seriously ill from coronavirus, get their second dose of the vaccine, if they haven’t already had it.

Will you change my appointment without me knowing?

If your appointment is changed for you, we will contact you to let you know.

What do I do if I miss my second dose appointment?

Wherever possible please make sure you go to your second appointment as this is the best way to protect yourself from Covid-19. If you are unable to attend your second appointment on a specific date, please re-arrange for an alternative day by calling 0115 8834640.
